Final Evaluation

There are certain codes and conventions short ‘thriller’ films follow. Looking back and analysing the production of my short film I believe that we have closely kept to these rules but at the same time, challenged them to create an effective physiological thriller.
As a group we discussed many different themes our film could be on the subject of. From the start we wanted to use the idea of relationships, so we decided to use the theme ‘obsession’ as we thought that this disorder can be connected to our subject in many ways. I also believed that we would be able to produce something that would tastefully portray a man who has an obsessive persona for his ex partner. An issue which is sometimes seen in society today. Our film raises awareness of physiological illness and it represents how the disorder can affect an aspect of everyday life, in this case; relationships. We knew that our film would be in form of a typical constructed narrative but to challenge common thriller films we have used various effects that change the order of time such as time lapses.
We discussed different locations which were suitable for the plot of our short film. For example, most of the scenes take place in Alex’s house. This location will make the audience feel closer to Alex as you are in his world and environment. Other locations included the pub which made the character’s ages more realistic, especially using the alcoholic drinks and the forest which represents Alex’s darker, more sinister side. I strongly feel that the locations which were used are very effective in setting every scene by making our characters and the storyline as a whole more realistic.
Before we produced our short film we created various scripts for each scene which scripted the dialogue in the whole film. In the scenes where Alex is by himself we did not use any dialogue to emphasise his mental disorder and the fact that he is in his own world that he has created in his mind. The scene with the most amount of dialogue in it is the pub scene. In this scene you see Alex and his best friend Tom having a conversation. I believe that this scene is very important as it takes Alex to a level of normality whilst he is with his friends. In everyday life it is important for a person with a mental disorder to be around their loved ones and I am glad we illustrated this in our short film. We purposely did not write any dialogue for Melissa (Alex’s ex- partner) because we felt that it would be appropriate not to hear her, to add a mysterious element to our film. Although Alex is a victim to his mental illness, Melissa is a victim as well which emphasises the stereotypical observation that victims are silent and unvoiced. This is the main reason why we did not write any dialogue for Melissa.

In all of our scenes we utilised natural lighting as most of our scenes were shot during the day or at dusk. In fact we did not use any artificial lighting in our film at all. Costumes were not seen as an issue during the planning of our film as we knew from the beginning that the characters and the target audience were of the same age. As we and people of the same age group are acting in our film we thought it would be appropriate to wear our normal, everyday clothes. This is because we wanted to make our present day characters seem realistic and the audience would be able to relate to them more.
We used particular props to set each scene. For example, in the pub scene we made it more authentic by having two pints of lager and a table umbrella, items you would associate with a typical pub. Also, when Alex is trying to write a letter to Melissa we used many pieces of screwed up paper to show his frustration and his strive to get everything in the relationship right. Looking back at the production of our short film, I believe that we should have used more props to make some of the scenes slightly more realistic.
The use of music was one of the main issues whilst planning our short film as we did not know what type of music to use and wear to put it. We then came to a decision that we did not want any music in the film but instead use the phone messages as a secondary sound source at the beginning and end of the film. This was to make the film more simplistic but also challenge typical thriller films by not having a unique soundtrack.
Whilst filming our piece we made sure that we used every shot size and various camera movements so we could be more creative, thus making it overall more interesting to watch. This included using a ‘dominant back tracking’ shot on Alex in the forest scene. This camera movement made Alex seem threatening and dangerous; the various traits we wanted to give him. Secondly, during the pub scene whilst Alex and Tom are having a conversation we used various ‘over shoulder’ shots. In fact, we filmed the whole of Tom’s side of the conversation first and then Alex’s side. We did this so the camera was in the exact position in all of the shots so the editing of the scene would look more continuous and effective. Also, when you see Melissa’s body on the floor I decided to use a submissive shot to make her seem weak, especially as Alex is towered over her. Another effective camera shot we used is a ‘tight frame’ on Alex whilst he is sitting writing a letter. Various props and several pieces of furniture are used in this shot but Alex is in amongst everything, situated in the middle of the frame. This was primarily to make him seem bigger and dominant.
Editing the shots was quite simple as we had experience in the programme last year. We first of all edited our own scenes and then we joined all of them together. However, I felt that we experienced some problems whilst connecting the scenes. This is because we kept thinking of new orders the scenes could be placed in our film. Nevertheless, we finally decided the order of which the scenes should go after thinking of factors such as the chronological order and the intended storyline. While we edited the film we added many dissolves/ merges to go from one scene to another. This was to make the film flow better. We also changed the audio in some of the scenes, especially the outdoor ones. This is because the wind affected the characters dialogue so we had to adjust the background noise in various shots. I believe we did this successfully.
The last piece of editing we did was creating the titles for our short film. We challenged typical films as we did not have any titles at the beginning but had all the credits at the end. In fact the only piece of text we had at the beginning of the film was the title. We used a typical black background and white font to make it simplistic for the credits. However, we did not use any type of soundtrack during the titles but instead replayed the machine saying; “you have no new message”. We repeated this voice until the credits finished.
Target Audience feedback
After completing our film we invited 15 people to come and watch it. However, the fifteen people who watched the screening were from our primary target audience (men, age 18- 25).
Most of the audience liked the film and thought it was very realistic. Some of the audience members also said that they could relate to some of the characters as they were the same age as them. Also, most of the audience even said that they could relate to certain traits of Alex, especially with relationship issues. On the whole, we believed that the feedback was positive and we are very pleased.

As well as creating a short film we were also asked to produce a film poster and magazine review for our film.
My review was in form of a newspaper article for the Sunday Times. The language I used in my review was very well spoken and elaborate which is very suitable for the readers of the Sunday Times as it is read mainly by middle class people. I made sure I was very informative about the film but also talked directly to the reader as a friend type figure. I feel that my tone was calm and collective but when I wrote about particular parts I like, my tone seemed to energise and become more passionate. The layout of my film review was in two columns and a box at the end where I put an image of the film. At the top I had the title and newspaper name, but to add more effect I also added four stars at the top which represents the star rating which I gave the film. Overall, I believe that the whole film review looked very realistic and the language and tone I used was appropriate for the target readers of the Sunday Times.
My poster is to advertise the short film for our target audience. I believe that I have followed typical codes and conventions whilst creating my poster. The central image is the side profile of Alex looking away from the camera. I used this picture because I wanted him to seem mysterious but threatening. I have darkened the whole poster as dark colours symbolise danger, death, etc. The font I have used for the title is stylish but simplistic and is white so it stands out from the dark image. Also, the written credits are in a common diamond formation, situated at the bottom of the poster. Lastly, underneath the title is the tag line; “How far would you go to make someone yours”? We came up with this tag line as we believe that is quite chilling which is very suitable for a thriller film. My film poster is targeted towards any thriller fans as although very simple, it is very effective in telling the audience what the genre of the film is and what it is going to be about. Overall, I believe that my film poster looks very professional and uses the typical codes and conventions to its advantage.
New Media
New media and technology has allowed us to effectively produce everything, from our film to blog posts during the assignment. However, this would have been very different many years ago before this technology was created. In fact I believe that new technology has democratized over recent years. This is in the sense that we as the minority can now create films, magazines, etc and not just the rich and powerful. New media allows you to create, produce and share pieces of work and text efficiently. For example, one can now upload their own videos on to the internet through the website Youtube. This acts like a show case where creators can show off their work to the rest of the world. Also, blogs can be used to share information on topics to larger audiences, such as the site we have used throughout the assignment. I believe that new media allows creativity in all areas of technology.
Using Media technology in research, construction,
planning and evaluation
Throughout our Media assignment I have used different media technology. At the beginning I researched short films using youtube. I believe that this website is very effective as it has millions of videos you can watch on every subject you can think of. This means that researching short films and its history was very simple. During the construction period of our assignment I used the editing software to edit our short film and digital cameras where we took pictures for our posters and other texts. Lastly, we have evaluated the project through blogging. This was very efficient as the site was practical to use and easy to upload each and every blog.
I believe that the whole project has been a success. I have learnt analytical skills during the construction process and I am overall very pleased of how our short film has turned out.

My Film Review- The Last Message

Film- The Last Message shown
Certificate- 15

Oliver Quinton’s magnificent short film The Last Message explores the physiological breakdown of one man’s mind in this gripping but chilling search for love. Edited by Adam Marsh and Screenplay by Harry Bradford, these industry legends together have undeniably created something truly exceptional for all physiological thriller fans out there.
Set in a contemporary town, a heartbroken Alex is desperately trying to get in contact with his ex- partner Melissa because of his obsessed mentality with her. He will stop at nothing to find her as we watch him physically and physiologically crumble, leading to a horrific conclusion.
Quinton’s film is a rare canvas among short film studio productions. It is an exemplary piece of storytelling with an almost terrifying element to it. What distinguishes the film however is the way the film itself and the colours seem to breakdown and darken, mimicking the character whose life is being portrayed. Alex’s shocking mindset truly is something we see in society today and I believe that Quinton has depicted this issue tastefully but effectively. A selection of new, fresh actors always reminds us that this film is a good thriller and not a film that a certain someone stars in. The Last Message juxtaposes the grim world of a mental disorder with the ravages of love. Another positive aspect of this film is the narrative structure. Although in straightforward chronological order, we are hit with various sets of time lapses, a very important factor of this film, emphasising the lengths and time Alex goes through to speak to Melissa. However, a unique soundtrack is essential in any classic thriller, in which this film does not have.

This film reminds me of Mary Harron’s masterpiece, ‘The American Psycho’, in which a man’s mental instability and blood lust leads him to serial killing. Mainly due to the fact that the men in both films mirror one another, in the sense that although they have a good life with people surrounding them, both live in their own twisted minds they have created through there obsessive disorders.
I feel that the target audience is for anyone who loves a good thriller, but being more specific this film is definitely for male viewing. As scary as this may sound, I feel that any man can relate to certain traits and personality of Alex.

The Last Message is an enthralling piece of cinema. The performances are near perfect and the plot is gripping. Although no Alfred Hitchcock yet, Quinton has done himself proud with this fantastic, must watch thriller.

My film poster

This is my film poster that I have made to advertise and promote our short film; ‘The Last Message’. I believe I have followed the typical code and conventions associated with normal film posters.
The central image I used is the side profile of Alex. I decided to use his side profile because this angle is more mysterious, which reflects Alex’s personality. I have also darkened the whole poster to set the tone of the film, as dark colours such as black are associated with evil and death.
The text on my poster is a typical font you would find on posters for thriller films but I have decided to colour it in white so it stands out from the dark image. Finally, the tag line; ‘How far would you go to make someone yours’? is very suitable for our short film. This is because it refers to obsession and being extreme.
I am very pleased with my film poster as I feel it is very effective at hinting what our film is about to the audience.

Poster Analysis- Titanic

The final film poster I am going to analyse is ‘Titanic’. The central image is the first part of the poster I noticed when I looked at it. It is of bow of the ship and at the top of it you can see the heads of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) resting on each other as if they are having an intense moment between them. This image immediately tells you that the film is about the famous ship, Titanic and that it is a love story. The colours of the images are very bright and it also has an artistic look to them.
There is a tag line located at the very top which states; ‘NOTHING ON EARTH COULD COME BETWEEN THEM’. This also concludes that the film is a love story. The style in which it is written is very calm, which signifies love and the colour white symbolizes purity. The title of the film is quite large and is located at the bottom centre of the poster. The text is in form of the bolts of a ship and it looks very metallic. This aspect tells the audience what the film is about and where it is going to be set. Also, above the title are the names of the main actors in the film. The reason why they are clearly stated on the poster is because Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet are very famous which will make fans want to see the film. Lastly, there are a lot of written credits at the bottom which is very common on a film poster. However, instead of a familiar diamond shape, the text is in shape of a box.
Overall, I believe that this poster has many aspects on it that will make the audience want to watch the film. For example, the actors names, the titanic itself for history lovers, romance enthusiasts, etc.

Poster Analysis- Halloween

The next poster I am going to analyse is ‘Halloween’. This poster follows the codes and conventions a normal horror film poster would use. Firstly, the whole poster including the text is a strong orange colour. The colour orange signifies fire but in context with the film, represents a pumpkin you would find during Halloween. The first part you see when you look at this poster is the tag line ‘EVIL HAS A DESTINY’ which is located at the top. This text is the only part that is written in a white font. I believe they have done this so it stands out from the rest of the poster and it will make you think what the film is going to be about. The central image is of the character ‘Michael Myers’ who is looking away from the camera towards his mask which completely covers the background. They have done this because you only see the character when he has his mask on, adding to the secrecy of the film. A major aspect of the poster is of his mask. This is because covering the mask is a montage of stills from the film. Although you cannot make out what is happening in every still, you know for a fact that something horrific is happening in each picture because of the people’s faces. This immediately tells you that the film is a horror.
The title ‘Halloween’ is in a bold font located at the bottom of the poster with the written credits underneath it. The written credits are in a typical diamond formation and the title is the largest piece of text on the poster. However, the aspect which is different on this poster is that you can clearly see the director’s name, ‘Rob Zombie’ on top of the title. This is on the poster because he is a very famous horror film director with a good reputation. Another pull in factor for the public.

Poster Analysis- The Godfather

The next poster I am going to analyse is ‘The Godfather’. This poster is very simple but has much significant imagery on it. The central image is of actor Marlon Brando who plays the character ‘Don Corleone’. You can see the top of his body where he has a very serious facial expression, looking away from the camera. They have used this photo of him because the Mafia is infamously known as being very serious and stern. However, you cannot perfectly see his facial expression as he is completely black and white and has been edited to have an old fashioned artistic effect. Also, the background is pure black and the text is black and white. I believe this symbolizes the different sides of Mafia culture as black and white are on different ends of the colour spectrum meaning you are on one side or the other. The only colour you can see on the poster is of a red rose in his jacket pocket. This is a very significant aspect on the poster as the colour red signifies blood, and the rose itself represent the family unit you see in the film. Violence and family are major factors in the film.
The only text on the poster is of the title ‘The Godfather’. It is written in a bold, gothic style and is in a white font to effectively stand out from the black background. However, the title looks as if it is being controlled by an image of a hand holding puppet strings which is connected to it. This represents the mafia being in control and feared.
Overall, I believe that this poster has many aspects on it which are very good at signifying important pieces of information about the film and although it is very simple, it is powerful to look at.

Poster Analysis- Tomb Raider

The central image of this film poster is of Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft) standing very firm, in which she is looking in a downwards diagonal position as if she is inferior of everything. To emphasise her power Lara is holding two guns in each hand and is wearing tight dark clothes to show her small frame but curvaceous breasts. I believe that she is representing a domineering type figure as she is a powerful, dark, sexual icon. The most significant part of Lara’s body is her skull belt. Skulls are associated with death, a main factor in the film. In the background there is a large artefact, possibly of ancient Mayan culture. As well as signifying adventure, it also gives the impression that Lara is very smart and knows about different civilisations. I believe that Lara takes up most of the poster because the actress, ‘Angelina Jolie’ is very famous, which is a pull in factor for the public and will make fans want to watch it. I believe that this poster has been targeted towards young males as it has a sexaul element to it and it looks very action packed which is the stereotypical favourite for this target audience. Pre- exsisting Tomb Raider fans would also find this poster appealing as I believe that it looks very similar to the game.
The only text on the poster is the title of the film, ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider’ which is slightly curved to make the poster seem more dimensional. The font is very bold and metallic, possibly representing a gun. I believe that some aspects of this poster uses typical codes and conventions such as a central image and title but lacks in text usually found on film posters.

History of film posters

Film posters are created for the public to advertise upcoming films. The content of the poster varies from who it is targeting, such as certain audiences or people in different countries.
In the centre of most film posters is a central image, usually of the actors in the film or a scene shot it self. This central image is very important as it is effective at telling the audiences what genre the film is and what it is going to be out. The tag line also gives the information. A tagline is a slogan located at the top of poster to advertise the film.  The tag line is usually a memorable phrase which refers to the plot of the film or is a line from the film itself. Film posters can also include the name of the director, name of the actors, the release date, etc.
The typical location you would find film posters are in and outside cinemas, but the poster is sometimes used in magazines, DVD covers and other advertisements. Overall, I believe that film posters are and have always been an effective way of promoting films all over the world.
For our A2 assignment we have also been asked to create a suitable poster for our short film.

Title Sequence

We challenged the titles you would find in normal films and played our titles whilst the film was in motion. This is very uncommon in short films and you would normally find this in a television programme. Many things were happening during the title sequence. Instead of reading the titles at the beginning of the film we instead placed the phone messages Alex sent to Melissa over the top of the beginning scene which is of Alex sitting around his house waiting for Melissa to get in contact with him. We decided that this would be effective as it is unusual not to have credits at the beginning of the film, so the phone messages would stand out more for the audience. Also, we do not have any type of music in the titles as we believe that the simpler it is the better it is for the message of our short film to be exposed to the audience.  The only text we have at the beginning is the name of our film, in which we decided it should be called; ‘The Last Message’. I believe this name is very suitable for our film.
For the end credits we used a common black background and white font for a simplistic look. Our credits include; the director, the cast member, screenplay, etc.
Overall, I strongly feel that the decisions we made for the titles to challenge normal short films was definitely for the best as it is very simple and is very effective in getting the message across to the audience.

Editing

At the beginning we agreed that the 3 scenes we chose to produce and direct, we would then edit. To edit our sections we used a programme called ‘movie pro 11’. In my sections the editing pace remained relatively the same as nothing exciting or chilling happened. I used a selection of different length dissolves where I thought was necessary so that the transition and overall pace of the sections ran smoothly.
During editing I realised I had to adjust the background sound on some of my sections, especially in the outdoor scenes as the wind affected the dialogue of the actors. I believe I did this well and kept it as natural as I could of left it so the dialogue was more audible. As a group we also agreed that as you watch the film the lighting would get darker to represent Alex’s physical and mental decline. Although this was quite difficult we all managed to use this effect in our scenes and I strongly think that it looks very effective. I believed that editing my scenes was very straightforward as I had lots of different shots to work with and I then deleted the shots I did not need.
After we all finished our separate sections, we then had to connect each scene in the correct order to how the story unfolds. We agreed on an order and connected every scene to its adjacent ones, using the cutting tool and a number of dissolves so that the short film looks and runs smoothly. I am very glad we have finished editing our short film and also very excite that we have a finished piece. All we have to do now is add the titles and credits.

Costumes and props

Due to the low budget we had to use and wear props and costumes that we already possessed. In terms of costume, our characters are normal, present day young adults so we thought that we would get away with just wearing our normal clothes. This also connects the audience and allows them to relate to the characters. The costume choices were never a main priority during the planning of our short film as we knew we did not need any different clothes to what we wear normally. This made the issue very simple and cheap.
We used many props in our short film. The most significant items are the pint of beers to set the scene in the pub, the screwed up paper on the floor to emphasise Alex’s stressful nature and the continuous sightings of his mobile which makes him seem desperate to get in contact with Mellissa. I believed we should of used more significant props in our short film by planning it more at the start.

Music and Special effects

MusicLike most films music is heard during the titles, credits and even throughout the film itself. However, we decided not to have any music in our film and instead had the phone messages Alex sends to Mellissa being played over the title sequence. These phone messages are an important factor of the film and we believe that they will stand out even more to the audience if they are played in place of music during the opening titles. We understand that most thriller films have some sort of significant music in them but we want to challenge normal thrillers and create something which is completely our own.
Special effectsSpecial effects can significantly change the film through factors such as sound, animations, colours, scenery, etc. In our short film we only used special effects to create the time lapses which are seen in a couple of scenes. However, during the editing of our film we used our skills to change and alter colours and lighting. Special effects can be very expensive and we did not have a large enough budget to use any other resources to create them.

Lighting

To utilise the natural lighting we filmed all the outdoor scenes in one afternoon so we could use the same light from the sun and it will look continuous in the edit. We also filmed one of the scenes in the evening when it was darker to reflect what was happening in the scene. In fact, we just used natural lighting in the whole of our short film as we did not need any props such as a lamp or torch and the indoor scenes were filmed during the day so we did not need the lights on.

Filming Locations

We used many locations during the filming of our short film. For all of the indoor scenes we just used Adams house so the transition between each room would run smoothly and are able to edit them together. We decided to shoot one of the scenes in a pub because Oliver’s sister works there so we were able to use it for as long as possible. The forest, although the furthest location we travelled to is the most effective in reflecting the darkness of Alex. I strongly agree that we used a variety of different locations during the filming of our short film which will overall make the film more interesting to watch.

Filming- Day 2

10:00am- For the first scene we had to find a pub garden for the location. Adam and I were in this scene.  The scene is of myself (Alex’s best friend) and Adam (Alex) sitting around a table having a heated conversation about his relationship with Mellissa. Oliver, whose scene it was, got us sitting opposite to each other and filmed over shoulder shots during our conversation. To make it easier, Oliver filmed all of my side of the conversation first, moved the camera and then filmed Adam’s side. This was a good idea as whenever the camera was filming me it was always in the same position. To make the pub scene more authentic we both had pints of lager and a table umbrella. Out of all the scenes in our short film, this scene definitely has the most dialogue.
11:00am- For the next scene we had to travel to meet Lorna and Marie who played Mellissa’s best friends. In this scene Alex has followed them both to their car so he could ask where Mellissa has been lately but it soon escalates into an argument. It was very sunny during this scene so the lighting was excellent but it was quite windy which affected the dialogue. However, we will sort this problem out when we edit the piece. Filming is unpredictable in a busy place so we decided to film down a quiet road so there were no problems. This was one of my scenes so I decided to add as many camera shot sizes in the scene as possible.
4:00pm- After having a break we met again a few hours later in the location of a forest to film another scene. We purposely chose to start filming at this time as it was getting darker, which emphasises the location (a dark forest) and reflects Alex’s thoughts and personality. This scene was very simple to film as there were no props involved and the only actor was Adam.
I believe that filming our short film has been a success and I am looking forward to editing it.

Filming- Day 1

11:00am- Me, Oliver, Adam and his girlfriend Katrina met at Adam’s house. We decided to film the very last scene where you see Adam writing a letter to himself pretending that Katrina is writing it for him, in which you then see her murdered on the floor. This scene was especially difficult to film as we had to use various techniques so you could not completely see who was writing the letter as this was the big twist in our film. However, I believe we successfully pulled this off, and it looked very effective as I was filming it.
12:30pm- We then decided to film the time lapse scene. This consisted of us taking lots of shots of Adam in different positions on his sofa. We will then edit these shots together so they look like time has passed. This scene was very interesting to film as it was good to experiment with the camera as I have never used a technique like this before. However, we experienced problems whilst filming this scene as the camera’s batteries kept dying so we had to keep recharging them.
1:30pm- After much discussion we came up with the conclusion that the first letter scene should be next. This was one of my scenes and I was especially excited to film it as I had many creative ideas. Firstly, I took different shots of Adam’s face and hands to show that he was writing a letter to Melissa but prolonged you actually seeing his whole body. This scene involved many props such as lots of paper and envelopes and pieces of screwed up paper on the floor. I chose these items especially the screwed up paper as I believe that it effectively shows is anger and perfection to get the relationship right. I believe that this scene was the most successful out of my scenes and it will also look very effective when it is edited.
2:30pm- The last scene we shot was of Adam (Alex) delivering the letter to Melissa’s house. This scene also involved time lapses of various letters being posted into her door on different days. We showed this through the lighting, filming shots when it was light and some when it got a bit darker. I believe that this will look effective once edited.

Group Meeting (Filming)

We decided to hold a group meeting to discuss ideas about filming techniques, when to film and locations. We have planned it so we will film on two different days. The inside scenes will be filmed on the first day in Adam’s house and the outside scenes will be filmed on the second day, in a pub garden and in a forest. We have planned it in this way so it would be easier for us and we will not have to keep travelling to different locations one after another.
In the meeting we also discussed filming techniques. We agreed that we were going to use every shot size at least once in the film and make it more interesting by using different camera movements effectively. I am glad that we held this meeting as we are all now clear on filming dates and where to meet.

Casting Decisions

Casting suitable actors is very important in any film as it allows the audience to relate to certain characters. We have a relatively small cast in our short film. In fact we only have 4 key characters to cast in the storyline. A man aged 20-30 for the main character, another man of the same age as his best friend, a women aged 18-22 playing the love interest and a women of the same age playing her best friend. Although it is a very small cast I believe that this will be more effective as it keeps everything simple and the audience are able to get to know each character in more detail, compared to a large cast where what you remember about each character is limited. We have also decided that we would play some of the characters ourselves as we all have the ability to act and it will save time and effort trying to find actors to be in our short film. Further discussion of casting decisions resulted in the names of the characters and the actors who will be playing them. I believe that our choice of actors is suitable for our short film as each actor looks around the same age as the intended ages of each character and the actors which are being used are close to members in the group so they are easy to get in contact with and are less likely to let us down. Overall, I am very happy with the characters and especially the actors chosen to play them.

Distribution of our short film

We have decided that our Short film will be distributed through film festivals. This is because there are many film festivals around the world primarily to show thriller films. Film festivals are also very popular and are a good way to show case your talent or to express a cause through your film about everyday issues in life. Another way we will distribute our film in through the internet on such websites as http://www.youtube.com/. Youtube is one of the most popular websites in the world, so this is an effective way of our film being viewed. Statistics also show that middle age men spend a lot of time on the site so it would give us more chance of our target audience being able to watch our short film.

Dialogue

Only some of our scenes require dialogue in them. This includes Alex having a conversation with his friend, the phone messages at the beginning and the car scene. The rest of the scenes, especially the scenes where Alex is alone have no dialogue in them. This emphasises the fact that Alex does not connect with the real world in any way and makes the audience wonder what Alex is thinking to himself. Lack of words in any film also builds suspense which is what we want in our short film.

Representation of our film

Different representations in film include class, age, gender, etc. Our film will oppose these typical representations in the media. For example, in our short film the main victim is a man. This goes against common stereotypes as it is usually the women who are victims in the film industry. However, at the end you soon discover that the woman is primarily the victim as she has been murdered by him. Thus the roles have reversed back to normal. We are also planning to show the main male character as middle class through various locations and costume. This also challenges familiar representations because people with psychotic and obsessive disorders are associated more with working class.

Target audience of our film

The target audience is a particular group of people, identified as the intended recipient of an advertisement, message or of a certain media. After much discussion my group and I have decided to target our film towards middle age men. This is because although our main character is psychotic, we believe that middle age men would be able to relate to certain aspects and traits of him. Such as relationship and obsessive nature to some extent. Our chosen genre of psychotic thriller also relates to quite a large demographic of our target audience. Lastly, middle age men would more likely understand the message of the short film, more so than if a woman would watch it.

Idea of narrative structure

Narrative structure is generally described as the structural framework that underlies the order and manner in which a narrative is presented to a reader, viewer or listener.
After discussing the narrative structure of our short film, we have decided on the following factors. Firstly, our film will be in chronological order; however it will be set throughout a series of different days with various time lapses that are obvious to the audience. Editing our film will effectively create these time lapses, a very important aspect of our film. In context of our short film, all the scenes will be set during the day or at dusk. This is because a change of day will be clear to the audience if each scene looks slightly darker and then lighter. We will also use various settings for each scene, to emphasise the characters desperation and the measures he will go to find and stalk his ex- girlfriend and to make the short film ultimately more interesting to watch. Finally, the whole film will be in perspective of our main character and his perception of the film’s plot.

Idea for my scenes

Out of the nine scenes we are going to film, I chose the three which I thought I could definitely show my creativeness and media skills. I believe the variety of scenes I chose to direct were good choices because each scene is very different to one another and I also think that I would be able to effectively show the physiological breakdown of the man in many ways throughout the production of the scenes. Although the scenes I chose may be quite challenging, I definitely feel I work better in a challenging, under pressure atmosphere. More over, I feel that my fellow group members, Oliver and Adam, were happy with their choices of scenes so they can use their knowledge of media production to successfully produce their scenes.

Pre- Production meeting

My group and I decided to hold a pre- production meeting. Primarily as we wanted to sort out who were getting what scenes to script, film and ultimately edit. Out of the nine scenes we are planning to film, we had to choose three each. We also decided to hold the meeting so we could decide on different locations for certain scenes, appropriate actors to be used and to create a filming timetable which stated when and where we would meet up with each other and film. I believe that the pre- production meeting was a success as it made us all clear of important aspects during the filming and it enabled us to answer any queries any of us may have had about the production of our short film.

Short film 3- Chicken a la Carte

Chicken a la Carte is the final short film that I researched and analysed. The subject of the short film is ‘poverty’. At the beginning of the film you observe people eating in a fast food restaurant in China. During their meal, they leave their chicken leftovers on their plates. The camera then focuses on the chicken bones throughout the film as you follow their journey which starts off with a man putting them in his bag from the rubbish bins with various other leftovers. The film then concludes with the man coming home to his family in which you can obviously see that they all live in poverty and he then feeds his family with all the leftovers he has collected. I believe that the intention of Chicken a la Carte is to show us as an audience that in this decade there are still people around the world who live in poverty and have to find food from bins just to survive. The contrasted settings of the short film, from the fast food restaurant to the run down village is the relevant aspect of the film as you see how wasteful the people are in the fast food restaurant, yet you see how happy the family is when the father brings back the leftovers. The soundtrack in the short film is quite sad so it creates sympathy towards the less fortunate who are viewed in the film. Poverty is a cause that needs to be addressed by everyone which means the implied target audience is for anyone who watches it.
Overall, I believe that Chicken a la Carte is a very effective way of showing the realism of people’s lives around the world that live below the poverty line. This is definitely one of my favourite short films that I have watched.

Short film 2- Signs

Another one of my favourite films which I found whilst researching is the short film ‘Signs’. Signs is about a man and a woman who communicate across the street with the use of written signs. You immediately know that the main subject of the film is about communication, with the intention being the importance of falling in love through communication.
Signs has two main actors, who both play the roles of office workers. They notice each other across the road through the windows of their parallel office blocks and throughout the film you see them begin to fall in love. The setting of the two office blocks, with windows that look upon each other is crucial to the narrative as it allows the possibility that two people can form a relationship with the communication of signs. This film was distributed at various film festivals and was awarded first place at the Cannes film festival. In conclusion, the main aspect which I like about this film is the soundtrack. This is because the film does not have any speech in it. I believe that this is because it emphasises the fact that they can only communicate with the signs and not through speech. However, throughout the film, composed music can be heard which imitates the emotions of the characters, changing tempo to represent them being bored, happy and sad. Overall, I definitely feel that Signs was very effective in delivering the theme of communication to the audience.

Short film 1- Lovefield

Lovefield is a very clever short film and was very well executed. The opening of Lovefield is very puzzling, as you are not sure as an audience where the location is, the background music sounds like a soundtrack from a thriller film and the colours are very monotonous. For example, instead of the sky being blue, it is a deep grey colour. Also, you continuously see a crow, which represents death. This factor makes you feel like something bad is about to take place.
In the first three minutes of the film, the audience is lead to believe that a woman could be being raped and about to be murdered. However, this is not the case. The main way that you are influenced to believe that this is happening is the camera movement. The camera helped to create this misinterpretation as it slowly revealed significant objects throughout the short film, such as blood on a towel and most memorable, a knife being forced into the ground by a man’s hand. You also see some of the woman’s body shaking and covered with blood. Another way that you are lead to believe that something horrific is taken place is the location of the short film. It is set in the in a corn field out in the middle of nowhere.
The actual plot of the short film is then revealed. The woman who you believed was allegedly being raped and killed was in fact giving birth with the help of the man, who soon reveals himself as a farmer type character. The audience then discovers that the theme of Lovefield is prejudice. In conclusion, the camera work in the short film was very effective as it did not show the audience much of the setting. You just see specific objects which you would associate with a horrific crime. It is not until the end, in which the camera shots get much wider where you can see what is actually occurring. More so, the location and weather turns very bright and sunny, this reflects the happy atmosphere and signifies the birth of life. Overall, I very much liked the idea of Lovefield and believed that is was executed extremely well. It made me think that you should never judge a book by its cover which is the main purpose of the film.

Creativity

The independant process of creativity is filled with complex aspects which is limited by some factors. I must take these factors into consideration during the creative process of my A2 short film project. The audience as a whole has bearing, which includes trying to meet or even beat thier expectations, suitably for the intended age group and intruging for gender, sexuality, class and race. Having considered this, my media group can also limit creativity with a clash of ideas leading to the project being a collective creative process. Time is also a major part of the project, in order to make our film on time for the deadline we need to plan out the actions that we are going to take. Motivation is another important factor throughout the production of our project; to be able to successfully produce our short film to a high standard we will need lots of motivation within our age group, which also affects the creativity we have. The final factor that I will be concentrating on throughout my project is experience. After producing an opening of a film last year, I believe that the experience and creative thoughts I went through then will help me with my creativity this year.

My personal short film idea.

The form of my short film is a comedy documentary which is set in a failing high school in England with a bad reputation. There is no specific subject of the short film as it covers all issues that you would associate with in a working class high school.
The basic plot of the 'mockumentary' is that a camera crew and an unseen (female) narrator film various events around the high school and interview key characters. The characters in the short film are two rival teachers, a troubled student with ADHD and a group of popular, bad mannered, out of control girls. The rest of the school are infact a completely real high school who are asked to play along with the actors when they inflict different events on various students/ staff members. The intention of the narrator is to make the audience believe that the short film and the events that are filmed are in fact real.
The narrative point of view is the interviewer who speaks to different people/ characters as she follows wherever the camera crew go. My film will be distributed in cinemas during the advertisements in a certificate fifteen film. The certificate of my film will be fifteen years as it contains adult humour and strong language throughout. I believe that the high school has characters which most people can relate to, which is why the target audience is for anyone who watches films that are certificate fifteen.

Group Brief

I am part of a 3 person group, working alongside my fellow media students Oliver and Adam, to plan and produce a short film which will last approximately 5 minutes. After discussing and researching short film ideas, we have decided to produce a short film about 'Obsession'. This idea will consist of a man's obsession with his ex partner and how his need to be with her again soon takes hold of him and controls his life. Our film will be in form of 9 scenes, all of which will show him trying to get back in contact with her by any means necessary. As each scene progresses you see him physiologically breakdown as his desperation increases, soon climaxing to a horrific conclusion.
We are currently discussing the script of the film and producing the story board for each scene. We have also made the decision that each of us will take responsibility for 3 different scenes of the film. This duty will include being the director, writing the dialogue, producing the storyboard and finally editing each scene that we have been set. I believe that this is a good idea as we will all be able to take charge of each aspect that creates and produces the film. The target audience is also a key factor we have been discussing. However, we have yet to identify the target audience our film should be aimed at. We believe we should come up with an agreement very soon so we can make use of appropriate actors and designs which will address the target audience. We will continue discussing this and other areas that need to be decided before producing our film.

Introduction

My name is Harry and I am currently studying A Level Media studies. We have been asked to produce a short film in its entirety, lasting approximately 5 minutes long which may be live action or animated. Aswell as producing a short film, we also have to choose two of the three options to go with it. These are:

- A film poster
- A radio trailer
- A film magazine review page (featuring the film)

Last year for AS Media studies, we had to produce the opening two minutes of a film. My group and I decided to produce an opening for the genre 'high school musical'. We had to produce a film that challenged stereotypes of typical high school musicals and tried to use/ develop the forms and conventions of real media products. I believe we succeeded whilst producing the film as we all worked exceptionally hard when it came to editing and producing the final product. However, we could have improved our final result by spending more time planning what we were going to do. I got an A grade for my film last year and I hope this year will be just as successful.
